January 21, 2022 – Corporate Governance Check-up for BIPOC-led Nonprofits

During these trying times, nonprofit organizations face a long list of regulatory and other legal burdens, making it a challenge to assess their governance and compliance procedures while also doing the day-to-day work to meet their mission. To support our nonprofit clients and community partners who are working tirelessly to advance race equity, secure economic opportunity, and strengthen their communities during challenging times, Exponentum and Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights are teaming up to provide a pro bono legal assessment focused on corporate governance.

ABOUT THE CLINIC: At the clinic, pro bono attorneys will meet with you virtually and walk through a series of questions aimed at identifying legal areas that your organization may need to address in order to move toward full compliance, follow best practices, and improve operations. Volunteer attorneys walk through a checklist with you to review articles and bylaws, general nonprofit compliance issues, and answer your governance questions. After this clinic, participating nonprofits may request assistance to follow up on legal issues identified during the consultation, such as revising bylaws, applying for sales tax exemption, or reviewing a lease. Such assistance would be a separate matter and may involve different pro bono counsel from the actual clinic.

DATE: Consultations to be held between January 21 thru February 15th

TIME: Approximately 90 minutes

LOCATION: Volunteer attorneys will provide virtual meeting room (Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting, etc.)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Board members, officers, and executive directors of BIPOC-led organizations working to strengthen their communities, or organizations with a mission to strengthen or serve primarily BIPOC communities. Organizations must have 501(c)(3) public charity status and be in operations, currently conducting activities or providing services. Please note that at least one person from your organization must attend the consultation virtually, since the volunteer attorneys will be using a screen sharing feature in the virtual meeting room, although cameras need not be on. Let’s Talk: Youth Safety & Juvenile Justice All adults who care for kids have one top priority: keeping them safe. Definitions of what safety means vary widely. Families, educators, mentors, and others all work hard to creating loving, caring, and secure environments for kids to learn and thrive. This not only means caring for their physical and mental well-being, but also creating programming and efforts to keep our young people out of the justice system, as well as increasing their opportunities to pursue college and career pathways once they exit the justice system.

Join associate program officer Matt Hoerauf as he gets insights from two Detroit youth—Oscar Gonzalez and DeAnna Shamily—about what makes them feel safe and from two Detroit organizations—the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation and the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program—working to keep young people safe and out of the juvenile justice system.   REGISTER HERE

December 1st, 2021 – HOW TO BECOME CERTIFIED

DPS is the certifying agency for the following certifications: Minority-Owned Business Enterprise (MBE), Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE), Veteran-Owned Business (VBE), Business Enterprise for People with Disabilities (BEPD), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Airport Concessions.

Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE).This workshop will provide detailed information on who is qualified to be a Chicago certified firm. Learn out what documents are needed when submitting an application and how to avoid the most common mistakes in the certification process. Subject matter experts will be on-hand to answer all your questions about common certification topics.

December 2nd, 2021 – PROCUREMENT FUNDAMENTALS: DOING BUSINESS WITH THE CITY

Do you have questions about how to become a successful bidder on City contracting opportunities? Unsure where to begin? This informational workshop highlights the role and responsibility of DPS in the City’s purchasing process. Come learn about different procurement methods and the laws which govern the procurement process. Once completed, you will better understand what it takes before you start the bidding process and your responsibilities after you have won a contract with the City of Chicago

December 3rd, 2021 – Annual Meeting and Holiday Brunch

Please join us at the ChicagoMSDC Annual Meeting and Holiday Brunch, where we will review 2021, highlight our P.I.P.E. Program graduating class, and hear from our keynote speaker, Jason Tyler, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial officer at Northern Trust Corporation. After the meeting, please stay for good food and networking at our Holiday Brunch.

Registration starts at 9:30 AM and the meeting will begin at 10 AM. The brunch begins at 11:30 AM.

This is an in-person, ticketed event. Proof of Covid Vaccination, or a negative covid test result within 72 hours of the event are required for admittance.

This event also includes a gift and toy drive that will benefit the children of St. Joseph Carmelite.

Please bring your unwrapped gift to the event and a representative from St. Joseph Carmelite will pick up all of the gifts and donations from Galleria Marchetti on December 3rd.
