It was so nice to see everyone last Sunday, July 23 as we united to celebrate Emmett Till’s heavenly 82nd birthday.\u00a0If you weren’t able to join us this year, you can catch up on what you missed with this brief recap of the day, along with a historic designation! \u00a0 This year, Emmett’s birthday fell on Tuesday, July 25 – a day that brought forth news that President Biden signed a proclamation<\/strong><\/a> establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National\u00a0Monument across three historic sites in Illinois and Mississippi: \u00a0 Roberts Temple Church of Christ in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, where thousands gathered to mourn Till’s deathGraball Landing in Glendora, Mississippi, where Till’s body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River, and Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Till’s murderers were wrongfully acquitted by an all-white jury. \u00a0 According to the White House, “the new national monument will tell the story of the events surrounding Emmett Till\u2019s murder, their significance in the civil rights movement and American history, and the broader story of Black oppression, survival, and bravery in America.”\u00a0The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument will be managed by the National Park Service. \u00a0 Blacks in Green commends the President’s designation of the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument. These sites are the stage where the horror and injustice happened, the emblems which we must remember. It’s been a long time coming, but we are glad that day is here.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
